چکیده

A new silyl terminated bent-core mesogen was synthesized which shows a randomly tilted SmCR phase and a columnar phase with p2gg lattice as new modes of self-assembly in this class of compounds.

Development of polar order and tilt in lamellar liquid crystalline phases of a bent-core mesogen.

A new bent-core mesogen combining a 4-cyanoresorcinol unit with two terephthalate based rod-like wings and terminated by two long alkyl chains, was synthesized and investigated by DSC, XRD, optical, electrooptical and dielectric methods. A series of liquid crystalline phases in the unique sequence SmA-SmA(P)-SmCPR-(M1/SmCPα)-SmCsPA-SmCPA-SmCaPA, mainly distinguished by the degree and mode of co...

Computer simulations of bent-core liquid crystals.

The phase behavior of model linear and bent-core molecules has been studied using isothermal-isobaric Monte Carlo computer simulations. The molecular model consists of seven Lennard-Jones spheres rigidly arranged in a "V" shape, with external bond angle, gamma. With gamma=0 degrees (linear molecules), we find isotropic, nematic, untilted smectic A, and two layered phases in which the molecules ...

Rheological Properties of Bent-Core Liquid Crystals

We show that bent-core liquid crystalline materials exhibit non-Newtonian flow in their optically isotropic liquid phase. We conjecture that this behavior is due to the existence of nanostructured, fluctuating clusters composed of a few smectic-like layers. Shear alignment of these clusters explains the shear thinning observed in bent-core liquid crystals having either a nematic phase or nonmod...

Field-induced transformations in the biaxial order of non-tilted phases in a bent-core smectic liquid crystal

The structural and electro-optic investigations of an achiral bent-core molecule in SmAPA phase, in which the polar directors in the neighboring layers are arranged antiferroelectrically, show that it undergoes transformation from one biaxial to another biaxial structure via a quasi-stable uniaxial structure on the application of the electric field. The noncontinuous change in biaxiality is exp...

Evidence for triclinic symmetry in smectic liquid crystals of bent-shape molecules.

The first experimental evidence for triclinic symmetry of bulk smectic liquid-crystal samples of achiral banana-shaped molecules is presented. This phase corresponds to the so-called Sm-CG phase consisting of biaxial molecules and characterized by two tilt directions with respect to the layer normal: tilt of the molecular plane (clinic) and tilt of the molecular kink direction (leaning). Each s...
